Case Study 8

Helical Anchors
i

Location: Naples, FL
Engineers: W.J. Johnson Associates.

Problem

Luxury condominiums were constructed with perimeter and load bearing walls founded on augured pilings.  However, interior floor slabs were designed as "Slab on grade."  Due to a layer of very loose soil (N valve of 1-2 blows per foot) subsequent settlement of interior slabs occurred.  Attempts to correct this problem by other contractors nearby properties met with limited success and slabs continued to settle.

Solution

HGS in conjunction with the engineers analyzed the situation and proposed using a series of AB Chance Helical Piers to stabilize and re-level sunken floors.

AB Chance ss-5 helical anchors were installed on a 7' grid pattern to an average depth of 25' thru 10" holes cored in floor slabs.  AB Chance slab brackets were then attached to the piers, then, using HGS's unique "Twist & Lift" leveling tool, floors were raised to within original tolerances.  Core holes were then patched and floor coverings re-installed
